The Southern Tier Challenger League is a baseball program for children and youth
with physical, developmental, and intellectual disabilities. Serving the
Southern Tier of New York and Northern Tier of Pennsylvania, we provide a fun,
supportive environment where players of all abilities can experience the joy of
baseball.
Our Mission
For 35 years, our league has offered more than just a chance to play—it’s
provided a place to belong. We help players build confidence, develop social
skills, and grow as individuals, all while enjoying the benefits of structured
team play.
With the support of families, coaches, volunteers, and local sponsors, we’ve
created a league where every player can shine—both on and off the field.
Program Overview
In 2023, the Challenger League transitioned from Vestal Little League to a
program under the Town of Vestal Recreation Department. Our structure allows for
flexibility and inclusion:
Teams are formed by ability, not age
10-20 players per team
Three levels of play:
Tee-Ball
Coach-Pitch
Player-Pitch
Every player gets a turn at bat. Games are relaxed and inclusive—no scores are
kept, and innings end when all players have batted. Players wear team shirts and
use proper safety equipment, just like in traditional baseball leagues.
The Buddy System
One of the most meaningful aspects of our league is the buddy program. Buddies
are volunteers who assist players on the field—helping when needed but always
encouraging independence. Whether helping a player swing the bat or navigate the
bases, buddies are there to ensure every child has a positive experience.
Join Us
Whether you’re a parent, player, or potential volunteer, we welcome you to be
part of something special. The Southern Tier Challenger League is more than
baseball—it’s a community where everyone belongs.
